Data Center Power and Cooling

Running servers requires significant infrastructure to keep them powered and at optimal temperatures.

Power Infrastructure

  • PDUs (Power Distribution Units): Think of these as industrial-grade power strips. They distribute power from the main source to the individual racks and servers, often providing monitoring and remote switching capabilities.
  • UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply): These battery systems provide immediate, short-term power to servers in the event of a utility outage, giving the facility time to spin up backup generators or safely shut down systems. Calculating UPS load correctly is essential for preventing downtime.

Cooling Principles

  • HVAC Systems: High-density equipment generates massive amounts of heat. Cooling systems manage temperature and humidity to prevent hardware failure.
  • Hot Aisle / Cold Aisle Containment: By physically separating the cold air intake (from the HVAC) and the hot air exhaust (from the servers), containment dramatically increases cooling efficiency and prevents hot air from recirculating into the servers.
